Why Is It?

June 20, 2008

Why glue doesn’t stick to the inside of the tube?

Most glues contains agents called cure promoters, which cause glue to bond, and stabilizer, which stops it from sticking.  Inside the tube, the balance between cure promoters and stabilizers is like two peoples pulling on opposite ends of the rope.  The surface of the tube is specially formulated to be neutral so that the two agents remain balanced.  Once the glue is out of the tube, the stabilizers are overcome by moisture in the air and by contact with the surface you to stick, so the glue hardens and bonds.

Why horseshoes are considered lucky?

The belief comes from a sixteenth-century idea that iron horseshoes were protection against witches and evil.  John Aubrey, an Antiquarian writer wrote in his 1696 book Miscellanies that the reasoning was that Mars (the Roman god of war and associated with metal iron) was the enemy of Saturn (ruler of the witches).

Another interpretation of the superstition was that a horseshoe held in its side makes a “C” which stands for Christ.

Why are there jokers in packs of cards?

Jokers began life in a game called “Euchre” or “Joker” that became popular in America in the 1860’s and still played worldwide.  Euchre features two high-value cards, “bowers,” which are represented by two jacks of the same color.  They are beaten by the “best bower” or “joker”.

The new card posed a problem for manufacturers: the old 52-card packs could be printed on a single sheet of card in even rows and columns, but 53-cards packs couldn’t.  To combat this issue many manufacturer printed a second joker.  The tradition of having two jokers in each pack continues to this day.

How To Fight Stress With Your Belly

June 16, 2008

In our stressed-out world, the fight and flight response that kept our ancestors alive has turned into “stew and chew”. Stress is normal. It is our adaptive reaction to threat. It signals danger and prepares us to take defensive action. Stress is experienced by everyone, and more often than not stress causes negative to our physical, emotional and mental health. To help you combat stress here are some few tips in using our belly together with some breathing exercise to relieve your stress.

Deep abdominal breathing, or belly breathing, helps establish a state of physiological calm and can neutralize the negative effects of stress.

Here’s a step-by-step lesson:

  1. Lie on you back and place a book in your belly. Relax your stomach muscles and inhale deeply into your abdomen so that the book rises. When you exhale, the book should fall. You’ll still be bringing air into your upper chest, but now you’re also bringing air down into the lower portion of your lungs and expanding your entire chest cavity.
  2. Sit up and place you right hand on your abdomen and your left hand on your chest. Breathe deeply so that your right “abdominal” hand rises and falls with your breath, while your left “chest” hand stays relatively still. Breathe in through your nose and out through your nose or mouth, and enjoy the sensation of abdominal breathing.
  3. Place a clock with a second hand in view. Breathe in slowly, filling your abdomen, for five seconds. Then breathe out slowly to the same count to five.
  4. Perform deep abdominal breathing throughout the day; for example, when you wake up, before you go to sleep, and in any stressful situation.

Personality Guide Tools in Choosing a Career

June 13, 2008

Personality is the deeply ingrained and relatively enduring patterns of thought, feeling, and behavior. Personality usually refers to which is unique about a person, the characteristics that distinguish that person from other people. It implies predictability about how a person will act or react under particular circumstances.

Your personality greatly affect your choices, including the course you will going to take, the type of job you want to do.  Many people make the mistake of taking up college courses that are not only mismatched with their abilities and skills, but also with their personalities. Thus, they end up shifting courses or, worse, earn a degree only to find out afterwards that they do not have the interest and aptitude in that field.  To avoid making this mistake, it is always advised that student before entering college or a person before applying a job would take career assessment test.  The career assessment test could serve as guide in choosing the ideal career for that person.  Commonly, most exam use John Holland’s Personality Theory, which indicate that a person’s personality determines what job or area he/she will excel most.

To help you in finding what personality dominates you strongly and what type of jobs ideal for you here are some websites (based on both John Holland’s and other personality theories) you can visit.  These sites can help you what career path you would take, and which job you could excel most.

PersonalityType.com include quiz to determine if you are an introvert or an extrovert, a sensor or intuitive, a thinker or a feeler or a judger or perceiver. The result of the quiz will suggests the different careers the quiz taker is most likely to succeed in.

It gives a set of quiz. Based on your answers to a set of questions, it determines your personality and identifies the perfect jobs for you.

Career Key website uses Dr. John Holland’s Personalities Theory. It features a detailed description of the different personalities. This website gives out the lists the various jobs suitable for your personality.
