Pressing Tip From The Expert

Expert in household textile share her knowledge on how to take care of our textile while ironing it.  Sang Cho, is a textile guru and luxury cleaner, she is the managing director of Prestige Cleaners, a launderers for glamorous hotels in New York City including the Carlye Hotel.

Here’s 5 tips from Sang Cho on how to press textile properly:

  1. Block the shine: To avoid the sheen that irons can leave, use a thin cotton dish towel between the bottom plate and your fabric.  This technique is great for fabrics like gabardine and for garments with dye the might run, especially silk.
  2. Wet it down.  Dampen any fabric made of plant fibers such as cotton or linen.  The moisture will ensure a crisper finish.  Use a spray bottle to dampen the fabric or just pull everything out of the dryer while it is still a bit damp.  Start with a dry iron to get the moisture out.
  3. Master your materials.  Always use the proper settings for the fabric you’re ironing.  Using of the wrong setting on synthetic materials such as nylon will end up the fabric glued on your iron.  Always iron synthetics fibers first to make sure that the iron is not too hot.
  4. Wash new clothes before ironing.  Chemicals used in manufacturing process can transfer to the iron and ruin your clothes.  It may also contaminate other clothes that ironed after it.
  5. Prevent water stains.  Many of the new irons are anti-drip, but you got an old model iron stop the leaks by pressing delicate fabrics first before you add water.  When you iron clothes that require spray or steam, always empty the water tank after you done.  In that way it will cut the chances of leaking next time and eliminate moisture that can leave deposits on the iron.
