How To Deal With Substance Abuse

June 16, 2009

Substance abuse can be detrimental in every aspect of person’s life.  It can wreck your physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual well being.  The first step in dealing with substance abuse is the acceptance.  Once you accept that you actually an addict is, your very first sign to recovery.    As soon as you start a treatment program, try these tips to make the road to recovery less bumpy:

1.  Let your friends know about your decision.

Your true friends will respect your decision of going into alcohol rehab or cocaine rehab.  Your decision might mean you have to find new group of friends that will be supportive your endeavor.  If you are decided to kick out the substance addiction, you must avoid hanging out with your old friends whom you did drinking or drugs before.

2.  Ask assistance from your family and friend.

Don’t be afraid or be embarrassed to ask for help.  You may need to call someone in the middle of the night just to talk. If you’re going through a tough time, don’t try to handle things on your own — accept the help your family and friends offer.

3.  Avoid going to events or parties that involved drugs or alcohol.

Going to parties that would introduce you to drugs or alcohol again would not help to your crusade of keeping clean.  Join in activities that don’t involve drugs or alcohol such as taking art classes or hangout with friend who don’t do drugs or alcohol.

4.  Remind yourself that being an addict doesn’t make you bad or weak.

If you fall back into old patterns (backslide) a bit, talk to an adult or a counselor as soon as possible. There’s nothing to be ashamed about, but it’s important to get help soon so that all of the hard work you put into your recovery is not lost.

Recovering from a drug or alcohol addiction doesn’t end with a few weeks of treatment program. It’s a lifelong process.  Addiction resource information suggested that people who suffer in substance addition find it helpful to join in support group that can help them stay clean.  Remember that being clean always starts with you, not with your family or friends; it will always start and end with you.
