Restoring Run Command in Windows Vista Start Menu

November 20, 2008

Run command in the start menu of my previous XP is my trusted, all-around “guy”.  I used it for almost everything, running an application, pinging my network connection, calling up a file or a folder and among other things.  Thus, when I start using the Windows Vista I felt at loss when I can’t find my trusted, all-around “Run” guy in the start menu.

I want my Run Command back, fast! So I try to tweak some settings in the Start menu and viola! A restored Run Command on the Vista start menu.  Here’s the quick tweak (I love the rhyme of the word ;- ) to have that all-purpose Run Command in your Vista:

  1. Right click the Start button.
  2. Choose Properties.
  3. With the Menu Tab active, click the Customize option.
  4. Browse through the list of options and check Run command.
  5. Click OK, then click another OK.

The Run command will be added in the lower-right portion of the Start menu.  For just a little trivia, Run Command doesn’t appear on Vista if you are using the default start menu. But if you are using the Classic menu run command is still a part of its start menu.

Laguardia Airport Shuttle: Your Comfort Is Thier Goal

November 8, 2008

One of the major inconveniences of traveling is transferring from one point to another without a reliable ready-to-go transportation.  As a traveler, waiting for a cab is quite a hassle and it causes a lot of stress.  But when you are traveling via Laguardia Airport you don’t have to worry about those inconveniences because there is Laguardia Airport Shuttle that can always provide first-rate shuttle service for you.

Laguardia Airport Shuttle is a service provided by GO Airlink Shuttle, it offers affordable, dependable and safe ground transportation services throughout New York City and the surrounding suburbs.  They have the share-ride airport shuttles provide transfers in each direction between LaGuardia Airport and hotels, residences and businesses between Battery Park and 125th Street.  What more convenient is that they operate every day of the year, even on holidays.

Laguardia Airport Shuttle and other GO Airlink Shuttle services has new, modern vans with a separate luggage compartment, upholstered seating, air-conditioning/heating, and driver two-way radio dispatch.   They provide customer service assistance in every terminal at Laguardia Airport, Newark and JFK.  They both have on line reservations open 24/7, and phone reservation agents are available from 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.  GO Airlink Shuttle lay claim to have the largest fleet of vehicles in the New York City airports, from 4 to 56 passenger motor coaches and is an official permit holder by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, authorizing us to load on the inner curb just outside of baggage claim. There passengers won’t have far to walk to reach the vehicle. Companies without this official status are not legally able to offer this service!
And best thing that I like most about Laguardia Airport Shuttle and other GO Airlink Shuttle services is that they are always reliable and on time.  Go! Airlink Shuttle will get you to your hotel, or destination safe, on time and in comfort.

How To Avoid Phishing

November 5, 2008

Don’t Click

Unless you are 101% certain, DO NOT click links in e-mails.  Though the message may look as if it is from your long lost friend or from PayPay, if you are suspicious, follow your instinct DO NOT click that link.   The URL may look legitimate, but the link under it could go to a different site.   To avoid phishing, go directly to your bank or Paypal websites by typing its URL into your web browser.

Beware of Greeting Frauds

Online holiday greeting cards are great for phisers.  Disreputable sites can collect information from people who send cards, and then again from the recipient who clicks to watch one.  Stick to Hallmark store, or just send one via snail mail or much better just send cash.

Beware of Pop-up Security Fakes

Ever been surfing along and get a pop-up window telling you to scan or disinfect, and offering you a handy product to do so?  Seem to good to be true? That’s because it is – it is an adware.

Use Firefox as a Sheild

Both the Firefox and Internet Explorer have optional phishing filters that you check for sites trying to steal your information.  In Firefox Options, visit the Security tab, check the box next to “Tell me of the site I’m Visiting is suspected forgery,” and go extra distance by checking the second button for “Check by asking Google” to get up-to-date phish listings.

Use Internet Explorer as a Sheild

Internet Explorer 7 comes with a Phishing Filter built in, but you have to it on via the Tools menu, where you can also report suspected phishing sites.  Internet Explorer 6 users can install the Windows Live Toolbar and the Windows live OneCare Advisor add-in to fight phishers.

Protect Skype

Information stealing is not limited to the Web and e-mail.  It can happen with other programs such as Skype and VoIP services.  In fact, a malware Trojan horse pretended to be a Skype to steal user name and passwords.  The solution:  Update your AntiVirus software.

Check Rogue Software

Software you may install may also be stealing your information – especially software that claims to help you by finding spyware.  If you suspect the a program, check it against the list of know bad-guy applications at www.spywarewarrior.com.

Get Extra Filters

McAfee and Trend Micro offer third party phishing filters (SiteAdvisor and TrenProtect, respectively) to augment what browsers can find. The OpenDNS service provides extra phishing protection too.  To see how it works. Visit go.pcmag.com/opendns.

Tricks In Haggling Like A Pro

October 15, 2008

1.  The Greedy Start

How it works:  If you’re buying, open with a price that’s way much lower than you expect to pay.  That tends to immediately lower the seller’s opening price.  Counter with a flinch.

2.  The Flinch

How it works: Show visible shock or disbelief at the opening offer.  Clutching your heart or show theatrical acts or emotion of disbelief and surprise (but don’t overdo it).  Watch the party when negotiating.  If they flinch, don’t get sucked in by making a higher offer.  Counter it with a somewhat dry “You had something else in mind?”

3.  Split the Split

How it works: If the other party offers to split the difference between his last offer and your last offer, take that midpoint as actually being his last offer, and split the difference between your offer and that.

Eyes-Catching Makeup Tricks

September 22, 2008

Color Palette: METAL

A mix of silver, rust and gold would give your eyes a drama, with a little bit of a rock ‘n roll feel. Rust is the main color, while gold highlights the brow bone, and a hint of silver in the inner corners of the eyes makes them look bigger.

Color Palette: EARTH

Olive-green and gold work great together, especially on yellowish skin tone. This is a foolproof palette for women with dark skin tone. Darker shades stay right above the lash line, while the light shade is applied on the top of the darker one for highlight.

This is the favorite makeup combo of the Captivating Capiz Zinnia.

Color Palette: WATER

The secret of this look is in the combination of eyeliner colors, including silver-royal blue, violet-blue and sea-blue. Never forget to put eyeliner, especially in the top eye rim or lash line. It gives your eyes a lift. Water palette has practically the same hues, and yet they create a feel-gorgeous look.

This palette is the personal favorite of The Seer, because this reminds her of the vast blue ocean.

Color Palette: FIRE

Power hues make this look hot! Here, deep orange and eggplant are combined for more playful mode. Chinky eyes women can pull this off because their eyes make room for colors. Make sure your eye shadows are applied halfway in the lids, then finish of with flirty lashes (curler plus mascara).

Hacking the Windows Vista Login

September 1, 2008

The most interesting feature of Windows Vista aside from its cool graphic and interface is its security. It is the major selling point for Windows Vista, even though that some of its best security features are turned off by default. In Vista you can optimize some of the security features, do some tweaks and tricks in some seemingly invariable interfaces so as to provide convenience and greater security.

Here are some cool tweaks and trick that I found in PC Mag that that take effect before the Windows Vista OS even boot.

Login Automatically

This keeps your password intact yet skip the Welcome screen and have Vista log you in automatically each time you startup Windows, enter the User Accounts window – but not in the Control Panel

Here’s how you do it:

  1. To access the first two advanced User Accounts Tools in Vista, open the Start menu and in the search box type controluserpassword2 and hit Enter.

  2. Select your username from the list, turn off the Users must enter a username and password to user this computer option, and then click OK.

  3. When prompted, enter your password twice and click OK.

  4. Open the Power Options window in Control Panel.

  5. Click Change plan settings under the currently selected plans.

  6. Then, click Change advanced power setting on the next page.

  7. Under the Additional Settings branch, set the Require a Password in wakeup option to NO and click OK.

  8. The last step is to jump to the Personalization page in the Control Panel and then click Screen Saver, turn-off the On resume, display logon screen option and click OK.

With all these options disabled, you’ll get to your desktop more quickly and with less typing.

Hide List of User On Logon Screen

By default, Vista shows a list of all the user accounts on your PC to anyone using your computer, but you can hide it with a quick hack.

Here’s how you do it:

  1. Open the Start menu and in the Search (Run) box type secpol.msc and press Enter to open the Local Security Policy Editor.

  2. On the left, expand the branches to Local Policies\Security Options.

  3. Then, on the right, double-click the Interactive Logon: Do not display last username option.

  4. Select Enabled and click OK.

For Vista Home Basic/Premium Edition (Which do not have secpol.msc)

  1. Open Registry Editor (type Regedit on Run Command).

  2. Expand the branches to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system.

  3. Double-click the DontDisplayLastUsername value in the right hand pane and type 1 into the data field.

  4. If the value is not there, right-click on the empty area of the right pane, Select New and then DWORD (32-bit) value, and the type DontDisplayLastUsername for the name of the new value.

The changes takes effect right away, the next time you log out or boot your PC, you’ll need to type both your username and password to login. But user with administrator level can still see the list of users in User Account in Control Panel.

Important Reminder: Back-up your Registry before making any changes unto it!

Why Is It?

June 20, 2008

Why glue doesn’t stick to the inside of the tube?

Most glues contains agents called cure promoters, which cause glue to bond, and stabilizer, which stops it from sticking.  Inside the tube, the balance between cure promoters and stabilizers is like two peoples pulling on opposite ends of the rope.  The surface of the tube is specially formulated to be neutral so that the two agents remain balanced.  Once the glue is out of the tube, the stabilizers are overcome by moisture in the air and by contact with the surface you to stick, so the glue hardens and bonds.

Why horseshoes are considered lucky?

The belief comes from a sixteenth-century idea that iron horseshoes were protection against witches and evil.  John Aubrey, an Antiquarian writer wrote in his 1696 book Miscellanies that the reasoning was that Mars (the Roman god of war and associated with metal iron) was the enemy of Saturn (ruler of the witches).

Another interpretation of the superstition was that a horseshoe held in its side makes a “C” which stands for Christ.

Why are there jokers in packs of cards?

Jokers began life in a game called “Euchre” or “Joker” that became popular in America in the 1860’s and still played worldwide.  Euchre features two high-value cards, “bowers,” which are represented by two jacks of the same color.  They are beaten by the “best bower” or “joker”.

The new card posed a problem for manufacturers: the old 52-card packs could be printed on a single sheet of card in even rows and columns, but 53-cards packs couldn’t.  To combat this issue many manufacturer printed a second joker.  The tradition of having two jokers in each pack continues to this day.

How To Fight Stress With Your Belly

June 16, 2008

In our stressed-out world, the fight and flight response that kept our ancestors alive has turned into “stew and chew”. Stress is normal. It is our adaptive reaction to threat. It signals danger and prepares us to take defensive action. Stress is experienced by everyone, and more often than not stress causes negative to our physical, emotional and mental health. To help you combat stress here are some few tips in using our belly together with some breathing exercise to relieve your stress.

Deep abdominal breathing, or belly breathing, helps establish a state of physiological calm and can neutralize the negative effects of stress.

Here’s a step-by-step lesson:

  1. Lie on you back and place a book in your belly. Relax your stomach muscles and inhale deeply into your abdomen so that the book rises. When you exhale, the book should fall. You’ll still be bringing air into your upper chest, but now you’re also bringing air down into the lower portion of your lungs and expanding your entire chest cavity.
  2. Sit up and place you right hand on your abdomen and your left hand on your chest. Breathe deeply so that your right “abdominal” hand rises and falls with your breath, while your left “chest” hand stays relatively still. Breathe in through your nose and out through your nose or mouth, and enjoy the sensation of abdominal breathing.
  3. Place a clock with a second hand in view. Breathe in slowly, filling your abdomen, for five seconds. Then breathe out slowly to the same count to five.
  4. Perform deep abdominal breathing throughout the day; for example, when you wake up, before you go to sleep, and in any stressful situation.

Personality Guide Tools in Choosing a Career

June 13, 2008

Personality is the deeply ingrained and relatively enduring patterns of thought, feeling, and behavior. Personality usually refers to which is unique about a person, the characteristics that distinguish that person from other people. It implies predictability about how a person will act or react under particular circumstances.

Your personality greatly affect your choices, including the course you will going to take, the type of job you want to do.  Many people make the mistake of taking up college courses that are not only mismatched with their abilities and skills, but also with their personalities. Thus, they end up shifting courses or, worse, earn a degree only to find out afterwards that they do not have the interest and aptitude in that field.  To avoid making this mistake, it is always advised that student before entering college or a person before applying a job would take career assessment test.  The career assessment test could serve as guide in choosing the ideal career for that person.  Commonly, most exam use John Holland’s Personality Theory, which indicate that a person’s personality determines what job or area he/she will excel most.

To help you in finding what personality dominates you strongly and what type of jobs ideal for you here are some websites (based on both John Holland’s and other personality theories) you can visit.  These sites can help you what career path you would take, and which job you could excel most.

PersonalityType.com include quiz to determine if you are an introvert or an extrovert, a sensor or intuitive, a thinker or a feeler or a judger or perceiver. The result of the quiz will suggests the different careers the quiz taker is most likely to succeed in.

It gives a set of quiz. Based on your answers to a set of questions, it determines your personality and identifies the perfect jobs for you.

Career Key website uses Dr. John Holland’s Personalities Theory. It features a detailed description of the different personalities. This website gives out the lists the various jobs suitable for your personality. After you’re finish with the test, the site will then gives a detailed description of what the different jobs entail and what skills and traits you need to excel in them.
